Role: Product Designer
Duration: 6 weeks
Tools: Figma, FigJam, Miro, MS Office Suite

Overview

An airline needs to update their mainframe-based crew management application to enable modifications for union contract and government regulation changes, reduce user training time, and automate select processes.

User Pain Points

  • Antiquated tool is difficult to maintain

  • Existing UI requires years of training

  • Most tasks are manual, risking error

Solution

A variable-access browser-based portal leveraging familiar UI patterns and automation where possible.

My Role

Gathered requirements, developed wireframes, iterated designs with client product owners.

Process

  • Conducted interviews with users and subject matter experts (SMEs).

  • Reviewed existing systems and interfacing processes with SMEs.

  • Analyzed language and task flows for simplification and modernization opportunities.

  • Ideated and sketched possible solutions.

  • Designed wireframes using corporate branding and other internal apps’ interaction patterns.

  • Iterated designs with SMEs and product owners.

Designs have been de-branded as the product is not available publicly.

Takeaways

  • For complex systems, it can be beneficial to begin the visualization process prior to capturing all of the requirements.

  • When access to current users is limited, former users and SMEs can substitute in the interim.
